My best friend Nadra sent me a new word. Torschlusspanik. It's German (of course) and it's that urgent fear you have when you think you are running out of time to accomplish big goals. Always a bridesmaid, never a bride. Looking up from the bottom of the career ladder while everyone's well on their way to the top. Tick-tock goes your biological clock. Torschlusspanik!
The Germans have a genius for concisely describing complex emotional states in a single (sometimes unwieldy) word. Schadenfreude, wunderkind, and wanderlust have migrated into our lexicon. Here are a few others I vote for entry:
Kummerspeck literally means "grief bacon." Sounds delicious right? Kummerpseck are those unwanted pounds you gain from emotional eating.
Blaumachen is an early morning lack of motivation. All you want is to hit snooze and roll over. Blaumachen. Say it out loud. It even sounds a bit like BLAH MORNING!
Backpfeifengesicht is the face that wants to be punched. I wish I could figure out how to pronounce it.
Treppenwitz is that George Costanza moment when the perfect witty comeback occurs to you...too late!
